What is Dry Eye, and Why
OTC Solutions Aren’t Enough?

What causes dry eye disease

WHAT CAUSES
DRY EYE?

Factors that cause progression of dry eye disease include diet, age, autoimmune conditions (rheumatoid arthritis, sjogren’s , etc), hormonal changes (peri-menopausal, menopausal, thyroid, etc), and post surgery (lasik, cataract, blepharoplasty, etc) computer/digital device use, contact lens wear, eyelid hygiene, certain health conditions, tobacco use, vaping, and many others.

Why OTC drops give only temporary relief

Why OTC treatments
don’t work for
everyone

Over-the-counter (OTC) treatments for dry eye, like artificial tears, may provide temporary relief for some, but they don't address the underlying causes of the condition. Dry eye can be triggered by factors such as inflammation, meibomian gland dysfunction, or tear film instability, which OTC products aren’t designed to treat.

OUR ADVANCED TREATMENTS

Lumecca-I IPL device for dry eye treatment

LUMECCA-I (IPL)

Lumecca-I uses pulses of light to treat the underlying causes of dry eye. It's a painless procedure done in an optometrist's office. IPL targets the skin and leaky blood vessels around the eyes, reducing inflammation and any bacterial growth in the area around your eyes. The energy from the light helps break the buildup of oil or other debris blocking the meibomian glands that produce oil for tears.

ZEST Zocular Eyelid System Treatment for dry eye

ZEST (ZOCULAR EYELID
SYSTEM TREATMENT)

This exciting in-officce treatment is designed specifically for the treatment of dry eye, demodex, and blepharitis. It works by gently exfoliating the eyelids to restore the natural state of the eyelids. It is a deep and thorough cleaning, comprehensively cleaning the eyelids and lashes so that they are free from debris, mites, and bacteria. It is particularly effective in helping to lift and clear oil, dirt, and debris along the margins of the eyelids. It contains properties that help to calm and soothe the skin to counteract inflammation and irritation. It is great for people who have chronic itchy eyes, work in dusty or dander filled environments, wear lash extensions, and more!

Is ZEST eyelid treatment right for you?

ZEST — a deep, gentle eyelid cleaning — is often a good fit if you deal with any of the following:

  • Blepharitis — ongoing inflammation of the eyelids that can interfere with healthy tear production and leave eyes red and irritated.
  • Dry eye — when your eyes don't make enough tears, or tears evaporate too quickly, causing burning, itching, and a gritty feeling.
  • Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) — when the tiny oil glands along the lash line get blocked, so your tears break down and dry out faster.
  • Makeup or debris buildup — makeup, oil, and debris collect along the lash line and clog these glands; a thorough cleaning clears it away.

ZEST is a gentle, in-office treatment that removes this buildup to restore healthier eyelids and more stable, comfortable tears. If any of the above sounds familiar, ask us whether it's a good next step for you.

Forma-I radiofrequency dry eye treatment

FORMA-I (RF)

Forma-I (Radiofrequency) dry eye treatment is a non-invasive procedure that uses radio waves to stimulate the meibomian glands in the eyelids. This helps to improve the quality and quantity of the oil layer in tears, which can alleviate symptoms of dry eye. It has the added benefit of producing collagen and elastin, which help minimize fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. The treatment is typically performed in-office and takes about 20 minutes. It is considered safe and effective for most patients.

Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers!

What causes dry eyes?

Dry eyes happen when your eyes don’t make enough healthy tears — or when tears evaporate too quickly. Tears aren’t just water; they’re made of oil, water, and mucus, and all three are needed to keep your eyes comfortable and vision clear.

One of the most common causes is when the tiny oil glands in your eyelids become blocked or stop working well. When this happens, tears dry up faster, leading to irritation, redness, blurry vision, and a gritty feeling.

Other common causes include:

  • Long hours on phones and computers

  • Age-related changes and hormones

  • Contact lenses

  • Certain medications

  • Medical conditions like allergies or thyroid problems

  • Dry environments or air conditioning

Dry eye can worsen over time if left untreated, but the good news is there are safe, effective ways to manage it. During your visit, we’ll take special images of your glands and check your tear quality so we can recommend the treatment that’s right for you.
Our goal is simple: help your eyes feel better today and protect your comfort and vision for the future.

What treatments do you offer for dry eye?

At Visionaire Optometric Spa, we provide advanced, non-invasive treatments to address the root causes of dry eye. Our offerings include:

Lumecca-I (IPL Therapy)
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy targets the inflammation associated with dry eye by improving the function of your meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil layer of your tears. It also reduces redness and treats conditions like rosacea that can exacerbate dry eye symptoms.

ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Treatment)
A gentle yet powerful eyelid treatment that removes debris, bacteria, and biofilm buildup along the lash line. This deep-cleaning procedure improves eyelid health and enhances the quality of your tears.

Forma-I
A non-invasive radiofrequency (RF) treatment that uses controlled heat to stimulate collagen production and improve the function of the meibomian glands. Forma-I helps restore the natural tear film and reduces symptoms of dry eye while providing a rejuvenating effect for the delicate skin around the eyes.

What results can I expect from dry eye treatments?

Dry eye treatment isn’t just about feeling better — it’s about living better.
Our patients often experience relief from irritation, redness, and blurred vision within the first few visits. As treatment progresses, many report waking up with comfortable eyes, needing fewer artificial tears, and seeing more clearly throughout the day.

Beyond comfort, our focus is long-term eye health — preserving your tear glands, reducing inflammation, and protecting your vision for the future. This is personalized eye care designed to give you confidence, clarity, and daily comfort — not just a temporary fix.

Are dry eye treatments covered by insurance?

Most advanced dry eye treatments go beyond what insurance is designed to cover. Insurance focuses on short visits and basic medications — not on regenerative therapies that actually treat gland damage, inflammation, and tear film dysfunction at the root level. Because of this, many modern dry eye treatments are considered elective care and are typically not covered.
Patients choose to proceed because this care is about much more than symptom relief. It’s about preserving your tear glands, slowing progression, and protecting the quality of your vision for years to come. Once glands are lost, they cannot be restored — which makes early intervention incredibly valuable.

For many patients, this becomes an investment in long-term eye health and daily comfort — not just another medical expense.

At-home tips to ease dry eye

These habits won't fix the root cause the way in-office treatment does, but they can take the edge off your symptoms between visits:

  • Take screen breaks. Follow the 20-20-20 rule — every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Blink fully and often. We blink less while staring at screens, which lets tears evaporate.
  • Add moisture to the air. A humidifier helps, especially in heated or air-conditioned rooms.
  • Wear sunglasses outdoors. They shield your eyes from wind, sun, and dust.
  • Give your eyes a break from contacts. Take them out when you can so your eyes can recover.
  • Use warm compresses. Gentle warmth on closed lids helps loosen clogged oil glands.
  • Try preservative-free artificial tears. They're gentler for frequent use than drops with preservatives.
  • Ask about omega-3s. Omega-3 fatty acids may support healthier tears — check with us on the right amount for you.

If your symptoms keep coming back, home care usually isn't enough on its own — chronic dry eye needs treatment at the source. Book a dry eye evaluation and we'll find what's actually causing it.
